Co-curricular Music

Hilton College is proud to offer music tuition from highly trained, experienced and professional peripatetic music teachers. Individual tuition takes place on weekday afternoons, beginning from 14h00 and ending in the early evening, depending upon the individual music peripatetic staff’s teaching timetable.

Currently we have 180 boys registered in a particular music instrument or activity (such as Music Production) for Term 2. A number of boys have been placed on a waiting list as our facilities and peripatetic music staff are full to capacity. This means that nearly a third of the boys at Hilton are involved in the music department, some of whom study more than one instrument.

How do I register my son for co-curricular music lessons?

At the first school assembly of the year your son was informed of the registration process for music lessons. However he is still welcome to visit the Music Department administration office which is open every weekday afternoon. He will be required to complete a co-curricular Music application form which will be processed by Mrs. Bell. If a vacancy for the instrument/s he has applied for is available, he will be placed with the relevant peripatetic music staff member. If not, he will be placed on a waiting list until such time that a placement becomes available.

PLEASE NOTE:

An administration levy of R70 per term will be charged to your account as well as an music equipment maintenance levy of R90 per term if your son:

1. Hires a  school musical instrument from the school.

2. Plays the Piano and uses the pianos in the practice rooms (this ruling is for the general maintenance and tuning of the pianos).

3. Plays the Drums (this ruling is for the general maintenance of the drum kits).

4. Participates in the Music Production programme (this ruling is for the general maintenance of the computer hardware in the Music IT laboratory).

For more information regarding this matter, please see Fees & Music Policy.

Peripatetic music teachers

It is important to understand that the musical instruments on offer are dependent upon the availability of peripatetic music teachers within the immediate surrounding areas of Pietermaritzburg, Hilton and Howick. At times however, it is necessary to hire other specialized music teachers (Oboe and Bassoon for example) living outside the immediate area. This arrangement will only be considered in exceptional cases, such as a learner taking music as an Examinable Subject or, if a learner is on a Music Scholarship in that specialised instrument. It must be understood that this is a costly arrangement, especially for a teacher who has to commute for a single learner.

Consequently the Music Department will consider any such requests on the following criteria:

1.       The availability of a specialized music teacher

2.       The intention of the learner to take music as an examinable Subject from Grades 10 to 12.

3.       If the child is at Hilton College on a Music Scholarship

This arrangement may be reviewed if extra financial cost is incurred (in terms of extra travelling time to the college) by the parent of that learner.
