Music Scholarships

Overview

Hilton College awards music scholarships to boys who show exceptional talent in this field. They will be expected to perform in public both as soloists and as members of an ensemble, and to be good ambassadors for the school. 

We encourage and recommend applications from any boy with exceptional musical skills i.e. who plays a solo musical instrument, or who sings in a choir and/or belongs to a music ensemble.

What music scholarships are available at Hilton College?

The Music Department is allowed a degree of flexibility with regards to music scholarships and so uses its own discretion in awarding these scholarships. The following scholarships are available:  
 

  • Internal Music Scholarships awarded annually to Form 2’s taking Music as a matric subject.

  • External Music Scholarship/s awarded annually to preferably a boy or boys coming into the school at Form 3 level who take Music as a matric subject.

  • Form 1: External Music Scholarship/s are awarded annually to two or more prospective Form 1 boys    

 
What are the minimum audition criteria for a music scholarship?
 

Prospective Form One Audition

Only candidates who are at a performing level of approximately Grade 3 (Unisa/ABRSM/Trinity) on their instruments are eligible to audition for a music scholarship.

  • One piece on their choice of instrument (minimum Grade 3).
  • If a second instrument is to be played, another piece can be played at ONE grade lower. 
  • A wide variety of Scales/Technical exercises from a recognised prescribed syllabus at the same music grade as the first instrument piece.
  • Sight-reading/Sight-singing 
  • Ear tests

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Applicants will be invited by the school to audition.
  • Applicants invited to audition by the marketing department must send a copy of the piano accompaniment (if applicable) to the music department no later than a week before the audition date via e-mail (music@hiltoncollegecom) or fax: 033-383 0080 
  • Applicants should be willing to study music academically and practically as a matriculation subject.
  • A letter of recommendation from the Head of Music from his respective school (or Instrumental Music teacher), which states why he is suitable candidate for a music scholarship.

Hilton College reserves the right not to award a music scholarship if no suitable candidates are presented.
