The Music Staff of Hilton College

The staff of the Hilton College Music Department have a unique blend of talents and skills.  Having studied widely in their areas of expertise, and having performed all around the world, at various levels, they are well equipped to manage the music department and its various divisions.

Brett Udal: Head of Music

Brett Udal started the violin at age 5 with Hester Wohlitz and later, whilst at Pretoria Boys High School, he studied violin with Derek Ochse in Bloemfontein. He completed a BMus degree at the University of Pretoria under the violin tutorship of Zanta Hofmeyer and Professor Alan Solomon.

In 1995, he completed a BMus Honours (Performance) degree and became a member of the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra in Pretoria. Through this ensemble he performed in a variety of different concert programmes including operas, ballets and musicals and seasonal symphonic concerts. Highlights included gala concerts, such as The Three Tenors Concert and Nelson Mandela’s 85th birthday celebration. Brett was also was selected for Chamber Orchestra master classes with Lord Yehudi Menuhin and Franz Welser-Möst, the principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1998, he was awarded the Higher Diploma in Education from UNISA before joining the staff of St Stithians’ College as Head of Music at the boys’ college in 1999. He then held the post of Director of Music at Beaulieu College in Midrand from 2004-2007.

His particular teaching interest lies in presenting music as a dynamic 21st century subject option, with the emphasis on innovative technology.

Brett’s sporting interests include cricket, rugby and sailing, for which he achieved junior provincial colours. He is married to Lagé, also a teacher, and has two sons, Luke (7 ½) and Jordan (4).

Jaco Dippenaar: Choir Director

After six years as Head of Music Department at the Outeniqua High School and two years as assistant conductor at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, Jaco Dippenaar was appointed as Choirmaster and Organist at Hilton College in 2004. He was appointed Director of Music at the beginning of 2007, and relinquished this post at the start of 2009 to become Housemaster of McKenzie House.

He holds a BMusEd degree from the Free State University in Bloemfontein, a Performers Licentiate in Organ from UNISA, an Advanced Singing Diploma from the Bloemfontein College and an MMus in choral conducting from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the Norwegian Choral Academy.

Hennie Nolte: Piano & Organ

Mr. Nolte graduated from the University of Pretoria with a BMus degree. He majored in piano performance under Wessel van Wyk, Organ under Wim Viljoen, and Music Technology and Music Therapy. He obtained a National Diploma in Church Music and a Higher Education Diploma from the same University.

He worked as accompanist at Pro Arte Alphen Park and as piano teacher at Montana High School in Pretoria before moving to Pietermaritzburg in 2002. Since then he taught music at Voortrekker High School and at St. John's DSG.

In 2005 he obtained a BA(Hons.) degree in Psychology from the University of South Africa and is a qualified counsellor.

Yanga Bangani: Music Intern & Marimba Band

Yanga Bangani was born in Bizana, Transkei. He obtained his Matric at Futura  High School in 2002, Durban.

He first went to study at the University of Transkei (Unitra) where he developed a passion for African Music and later in 2005, enrolled himself at UKZN where he pursued his BA MUSIC studies specializing in African Music and dance under the directorship of Dr Patricia Opondo. During this time, he appeared in a variety of university lunch hour concerts , music recitals and theatrical shows.

He has performed in a Marimba Band at the Baxter Theatre on a music tour in 2004 , the Grahamstown Arts Festival from  2005 – 2007 and also in the Durban FIFA Complementary Draw at the ICC in 2007. His main instruments includes African drums, flutes, marimbas and mbiras.

He is currently studying his Postgraduate degree (PGCE) at UKZN-Pietermaritzburg whilst serving as an intern teacher at Hilton College.

Yanga’s sport interests includes Cross-country , Boxing , Athletics ,Soccer and Shooting. He has 3 year-old  daughter (Khonaye).

Peripatetic Music Staff

Lynn Bell: Music Department Administrator

Lynn has had a long and happy association with Hilton College. After retiring in 2005, she returned to the Music Department in 2008 as a part-time music administrator to assist in the administration of the department.

Myna Dicarlofelice - Piano

Mrs. Dicarlofelice has been teaching in Pietermaritzburg for 30 years. She has been teaching at Hilton College for 9 years and is a founding member of the Pietermaritzburg Music School, where she still teaches. She also teaches at the Wykeham Collegiate.

She has three children, three grandchildren and hundreds of surrogate children she sponsors as well.

 

 
Robin Brown: Form 1 Programme (Trombone), Contemporary Rock band and Bass Guitar

Robin is an experienced bass guitar teacher who has been performing in KwaZulu-Natal for over 15 years. He is currently involved in training bands across Pietermaritzburg, as well as show directing, creating backing-tracks and sheet music writing for two musical productions.

He also teaches at other Pietermaritzburg schools.

Warren Shone: Guitar and Bass Guitar

Mr. Shone has been a full time guitar teacher since 1996, and currently teaches at St Johns DSG, Hilton College, Cowan House, Cordwalles Prep and Epworth schools. He also a seasoned festival performer of original material, both as a solo performer and with his erstwhile band “Shifting Silence”. He has played at Splashy Fen 3 times, Southern cross twice, as well as one- offs at various other festivals such as Emoyeni and Purple Cow. He has been a veteran Pietermaritzburg folk club performer since 1993, and has been part of the pub/restaurant/event circuit since 1995, performing both original material and standards.

Over many years of teaching experience, he has developed a basic guitar course for beginners. This forms the foundation for individual or group guitar programs. He encourages student participation when designing their guitar course to ensure that it is tailored to their musical interests and abilities. More advanced theory and technique is taught as required, and all styles of guitar are catered for including classical, rock and folk.

Mfanafuthi Hlope: Voice

Mr. Hlope started studying music at the University of Durban-Westville under Mr. James Conrad. He completed a BA(Hons) degree at the University of Durban in Performance and Ethnomusicology where he studied under Mrs. Colleen Phillip. In 1996 he made his debut with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has attended numerous masterclasses with both local and international singers, and has appeared as soloist in all the major concert venues in South Africa. He is a member of the Three South African Tenors and has appeared both locally and internationally with them since 1996.

Lubomir Minkov: Bassoon

Mr. Minkov was born in Rousse, Bulgaria and received schooling at the Rousse Music School. He received his MMus in Bassoon from the Bulgarian State University in 1988.

He is currently the Co-Principal Bassoon and Contra Bassoon player of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. He previously held similar positions with the Chamber Orchestra of Pernik and the Vratza Philharmonic Orchestra.

He is married to Vessela, who is also a bassoonist, and they have a daughter, Margarita.

Leandros Stavrou: Guitar

Mr. Stavrou studied classical guitar under Maestro Fritz Buss who studied under the internationally acclaimed guitarist Narciso Yepes, designer of the advanced 10 string guitar. He has participated, by invitation, in masterclasses by Narciso Yepes, Timothy Walker and Aldo Lagrutta.

In 1981 he won his category in the National Guitar Festival of South Africa and was on the panel of adjudicators for this festival in 1991.

He still performs around the country as a soloist and also in duets, trios and ensembles. He lectures at the Music Department of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and teaches at various schools in the Midlands.

In his spare time he designs and builds guitars.

David Solomon: Brass

Mr. Solomon started learning Trombone with Dr. Paul van Zuilenburg when he entered Hilton College. He achieved Grade 8 with the ABRSM in 2001, and was awarded top place in the brass category in the 2001 ABSA National Youth Music Competition.

He began a BMus degree at the University of Pretoria under Tania LeQuaen in 2002, before moving down to the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2004 where he received lessons from David Rey and Tony Boorer and completed his degree in 2006. He was the principal trombone of the National Youth Orchestra for the tour to Bonn, Germany in 2006, and has worked with some of the biggest orchestras in South Africa, including the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.

 

 

 

 

Yura Litvinenko: Double-Bass

 

Theo Venter: Flute

Theo Venter is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State where he majored in flute performance and harmony and counterpoint.  He taught flute at the Durban Music and Ballet School from 1986 until its closure in 1997, during which time he also served as conductor of the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind band. 

He is a founder member of the newly formed Durban Music School and teaches flute at the University of Natal as well as managing a successful private studio. He has played with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Free State Symphony Orchestra and participates regularly in solo and chamber ensemble concerts.

Joshua Gray: Music Production

Joshua Gray started his first musical instrument (Drums) at the age of 6, reaching Grade 8 level by the age of 16. He subsequently studied Jazz Piano with Jeff Judges. In 2003 he enrolled at I.C.B.C for two years and was tutored by Charmain Smith (classical piano 1st instrument), Burton Naidoo (Jazz Piano), Natalie Rungan (Jazz Voice 2nd instrument), Nathi Zungu (Keyboards), Sound engineering/Music Technology (San Naidoo/ Jazz Sardine/Clint Grove).

While still at school, Joshua began buying music production software and recording equipment from money made making beats for upcoming artists. His contacts and friendships within the music production business enabled him to develop his skills further in this field. After his studies he worked at Scottsville Primary School as head of the Music Department and as Choir Master. He has been a member of the Hilton College peripatetic music staff from 2007 to the present.

He has now built up a professional recording studio which is equipped with recording equipment and instruments of the highest international standards. He has recorded artists such as Mario Ogle (‘HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL’- SOUTH AFRICA'S TOP 5 COMPETITION) WHITECHAPEL, DCC BAND, SPIN THE FLAVA ( METRO fm and SAMA nominated) THE RANKS ( 5fm's 2008 competition winners).

He currently has artists such as PITCH BLACK AFRO, NIKKI (2008 METRO fm winner) lined up for new projects in 2009.He has also done over 20 band live recordings such as Swazi Dlamini featuring ERNIE SMITH (both are SAMA AND CORA WINNERS)

 Joshua’s aim is to be one of South Africa’s most successful music producers.

Driene studied at the Conservatoire of Music, Pretoria under the tuition of Jos de Groen (Snr).She has been teaching the Oboe for over 35 years.
